Did you know that there’s a common thread behind your period and other hormone symptoms? You may be thinking it’s your diet or a significant hormone imbalance, but actually the root often can come down to stress! Of course this may not come as a shock. The world we’re living in, the collective experiences we’ve all been dealing with, on TOP of the never-ending to do’s & demands.
How does stress show up as period problems or hormone imbalances? Make a checkmark next to each one you’re dealing with:
- brain fog
- period cramps or pain
- sleep issues
- food cravings
- long or heavy periods
- missing periods
- irregular periods
- gut issues
If you’re marking off a lot of these, I know how frustrating it can be. These are really common symptoms I see with my ladies, but that doesn’t mean they’re normal or something we have to just live with.
We can make some really simple shifts to help improve the symptoms we’re experiencing. You may be thinking, “of course I know stress isn’t doing anything positive for my hormones or period, but I don’t even know where to start with managing it better…”
When we think of stress, we often think of it as this feeling of being overwhelmed. Stress is really a response to things going on in our lives or happening internally / physically in the body. The body feels this in different areas and can hold onto the emotion. So in order to allow the emotion to move along and not stay lodged w/in your body or organs, I like to do the following exercise:
Every time I feel a stressful event come on, I take 3 big, deep breaths. Then I envision an imaginary box that is waiting to receive all of my concerns. I mentally write each concern down in my mind’s eye, and hand it over to my box. Take another 3 deep breaths. Wherever I feel the emotion “trapped” in my body, I ask it what it feels like and I sit with that feeling, knowing that it’s perfectly fine to have that emotion.
Often times, our emotions are simply wanting to be heard.
Allow yourself the opportunity to truly listen to what your body is communicating to you.
