The Most Important Vitamin for Your Thyroid

The Most Essential Vitamin for Your Thyroid

Your Thyroid Releases Toxins

During the production of thyroid hormones (T4 & T3), a large amount of free radicals are normally produced as well. The free radicals are toxic and must be eliminated as soon as possible in order to prevent the negative effects if they’re accumulated.

Your MUST – Have Antioxidant

This is where my very most favorite antioxidant, widely known as the “mother of all antioxidants” aka Glutathione, comes in handy. When Glutathione is present in appropriate levels in your body, it’s able to address the free radiacal damage and solve it in a matter of minutes, preventing any negative effects from occurring. However, if your body is struggling with Glutathione deficiency, the free radicals will accumulate causing an imbalance in the thyroid and soon in your overall health as well.

But that is not all….If your immune system is, for any reason, compromised, it can cause an imbalance in the Th1/Th2 system, causing it to attack its very own healthy body tissues. This will ultimately result in autoimmune disease.

This might be the first time that you are hearing about the importance of Glutathione, but if you’re interested in keeping your thyroid gland (and your immunity) in the best shape ever, you’ll want to incorporate this into your lifestyle as if it’s your BFF!

I uses it for so many different areas of my Practice such as:

Increasing Glutathione Naturally

Even though your body produces glutathione on it’s own, it’s usually not enough in cases of severe oxidation such as in adrenal fatigue, hormone imabalance, neurodegernative disease, and Hashimotos or general thyroid disease.

So what can you do on your own?

  • Increase your vitamin C – Vitamin C IVs for example help to increase levels of glutathione found in your white and red blood cells. For my patients I add glutathione to the IVs for an extra powerful boost of antioxidants!
  • Increase this Liver Herb – Milk thistle is a herbal supplement extracted from a plant called Silybum marianum. It contains three compounds, all of which are known for their strong antioxidant properties. But that is not all. Milk thistle is also known to increase the Glutathione levels in the body. So consider buying yourself a quality milk thistle supplement.
  • Avoiding Alcohol – if you drink excessive amounts of alcohol on a regular level this exposes you to a decrease in Glutathione levels, especially in your lungs, by 80 to 90%. So take a break from the vino or try decreasing the amount of martinis.

Hypothyroidism and the Keto Diet

Hypothyroidism and the Keto Diet

Keto & Your Thyroid

Don’t Keto Your Thyro

Hypothyroidism in a Nut Shell

Hypothyroidism is when your thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone and this affects nearly every part of your body, including your metabolism, brain, heart, muscles, and skin. Without enough thyroid hormone (which is partially comprised of glucose molecules) all of your bodily processes slow down to a sluggish crawl (ugh). Research shows that women with autoimmune disease are more likely to develop hypothyroidism…which is even a heavier burden on the body.

How Your Adrenals are Involved

Your adrenals produce stress hormones, such as cortisol. When you experience stress, a cascade of stress hormones signals your body to slow down all processes that are unnecessary for overcoming the stressor in front of you, including thyroid hormone production. Chronic stress overworks your adrenals, which are unable to keep up with the constant demand for more and more stress hormones, inevitably leaving you in a state of adrenal fatigue…basically feeling tired all the time, no matter how many cups of coffee or scoops of maca you down!

How Keto Affects Your Adrenals & Thyroid

The core of ketogenic diet is to significantly reduce the intake of sugars and starches because these foods are broken down into glucose and insulin in the blood once we eat them. It was specifically created to mimic fasting or starvation from a metabolic perspective. However, ketosis can be a major strain on the adrenals. Reduced carb intake, leads to a decrease in thyroid hormone levels and an increase in cortisol—which decreases thyroid function further and means more work for your adrenals too.

But did you know caloric restriction lowers the concentration of T3 hormone? Yup! Here’s a recent study about exactly that. The primary reason why the lower calorie consumption decreases T3 is to improve the chances of survival when our ancestors, back in time, were dealing with food shortage. As a result, metabolism slows down, and the body burns fewer calories. The body is truly perfectly smart!

Hashimotos and Keto

The biggest problem with keto if you have Hashimotos is that the areas of the brain which regulate the function HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis needs glucose to work properly, and remember the adrenals respond poorly to a low caloric state too! To add fuel to the fire, severe carb restriction decreases T3 levels while increasing reverse T3.

Determining Which Diet Is Right For YOU

Every body is different, so it’s important to listen to your body and know what you do or do not tolerate. You may do perfectly fine on a keto diet, or you might find your body doesn’t respond well to it. Either way, if you have hypothyroidism and are looking to experiment don’t!

Call me first. I’m here to help you…

Why Diets Just Don’t Work

Why Diets Just Don’t Work

why diets don't work

Almost daily I’m asked, “what’s the best way to lose weight?” Most often my patients see random messages or one-liners that speak to one small piece of the weight loss puzzle, and they are intrigued, but more often, they’re confused.

The hardest part is that there is no short answer. It’s complicated.

So I thought I’d try and shed some light on this timeless question as to the best way to lose weight.
To start, our bodies are wired to push us off any diet or restriction – and, even though we tend to think this is a horrible thing, or something we need to overcome and conquer, it’s actually a good thing. Our resistance to dieting is a biological advantage for survival. But that inherent protection against dieting is why dieting is so hard, and leaves us so obsessed with weight and counting calories. It’s also why we get so hungry. It’s why we can’t stop thinking about food. It’s why we binge. And why we almost always gain the weight back. We are simply programmed in this way.
Dieting, the way I see it, puts us in a state of obsession with food. Food obsession is a real thing nowadays and seems to be getting worse. As a society, we definitely feel obsessed when we are restricted in any way. Even just mentally restricted. Dieting makes us fixated on food and this because of a chemical reaction in our brain and in our body. Dieting and restricting make us act obsessed to all types of food. It feels real and it is, but it is just the state we are in when the body is screaming to be fed.
When you are chronically worried about food, it raises your free radicals, insulin, and blood pressure which all damage your brain cells.  Your body naturally has a checks and balances system to make sure you don’t go too far in one direction.  When you’re stressed your catecholamines rise releasing serotonin and GABA to counteract it.  If you’re constantly under stress and releasing serotonin and GABA, you’ll eventually desensitize to them and they’ll become depleted.  This leaves the catecholamines to run rampant.  Excess amounts of catecholamines in your system leads to depression, anxiety, and insomnia.  Which means your feel-good hormones get depleted, circling back to the feelings of anxiety, depression and obsession!

STOPPING THE OBSESSION

If you feel that you’re obsessed with food, it’s because your body is trying to communicate with you and begging you for help. Please listen. When you do, you’ll be able to stop your battle with dieting for good and any obsession that you created to go along with it.

Let’s do this together, I’m here to help you to start listening (and healing) your body.

Holistic Solutions to Thyroid Disease

Discovering the Root of the Cause and Healing the Thyroid Naturally

As a Naturopathic Doctor, I am sometimes confronted with cases in which I have to ask myself the question, “what is the root of the cause of my patient’s illness?”. Often times, the answer may not seem as obvious as others, especially when it comes to addressing thyroid problems. We start with the understanding that your body was created and designed to be able to heal itself. This is called homeostasis. So if our body is not healing, then why not? Discovering the block that somehow caused the thyroid imbalance becomes my joyous task as it results in my patient’s greatest relief.

The thyroid is a gland that sits in the middle of the neck. It helps to regulate temperature, metabolism, mood and sex hormones. As small as it is, it is considered mighty and robust in its responsibilities, and when it is thrown out of balance, it is not a pleasure to deal with. Thyroid imbalances or diseases have become quite common ranging from hypothyroidism to hyperthyroidism.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidismnatural solutions to hypothyroidism

In Hypothyroidism the gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone and metabolism slows down. Symptoms may include:

  • Fatigue/weakness
  • Hair loss
  • Dry skin
  • Weight gain
  • Imbalances periods
  • Brittle nails
  • Muscle aches
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Being cold or chilled easily
  • Puffiness around the eyes
  • Constipation

Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism

In Hyperthyroidism the gland is overactive and producing too much thyroid hormone, causing the metabolism to increase. Symptoms may include:

natural solutions to hyperthyroidism

  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Infrequent periods
  • Easily overheating
  • Change in vision
  • Rapid heart beat
  • Increased sweating
  • Nervousness
  • Frequent or loss bowel movements
  • Tremors
  • Anxiety

Two other common imbalances of the thyroid gland may exist which are autoimmune related. This means that the body produces antibodies against the thyroid. In Graves disease, the antibodies cause the thyroid gland to produce too much thyroid hormone thus leading to hyperthyroidism. In Hashimoto’s disease, the antibodies result in Hypothyroidism.

Possible Causes of Thyroid Disease

  • Pregnancy
  • Estrogen therapy including birth control pills
  • Stress
  • Elevated cortisol levels
  • Caloric restriction
  • Imbalances in selenium or iodine
  • Genetics
  • Smoking
  • Infections
  • Family history
  • Medications
  • Exposure to radiation
  • Environmental toxins or chemicals

Addressing the Root Cause with Naturopathic Solutions

While your thyroid function will likely benefit from some type of thyroid hormone replacement medication, that medication won’t address the “root causes” of your autoimmune disease, nor the reason why your immune system is attacking your thyroid. Below I would like to share my top four approaches to healing the thyroid naturally.

Repairing Gut Issues

If you have Hashimoto’s, or any autoimmune condition, repairing your gut is vital to reversing your symptoms. After all, nearly 70% of your entire immune system is located in your digestive tract. The wall of your intestines is supposed to be just a little permeable so the nutrients from your food can get through and into your bloodstream. When that wall becomes leakier than it should be, it’s no longer just the nutrients getting through.

Once your gut becomes leaky, larger molecules – food particles, bacteria, viruses, and toxins – enter your bloodstream where your immune system detects them as foreign invaders, attacking them and leading to chronic inflammation. Many of these “foreign invaders” floating in your bloodstream look very similar to your own body’s cells. Your immune system can get confused and accidentally attack your tissues. This process of mistaken identity is called molecular mimicry, and is one of the theories as to how autoimmunity happens. In the case of Hashimoto’s specifically, gluten’s chemical structure is very similar to that of your thyroid tissue. So once gluten has led to leaky gut and is now floating freely throughout your bloodstream, it can trigger mistaken attacks on your thyroid.

Nourishing the Thyroid

  1. B-Vitamins – these vitamins help to supply us with the necessary energy we need to function which is often low in Hashimoto’s.  They also help with our metabolism and converting carbohydrates into energy.
  2. Vitamin D– is necessary for the proper functioning of hormones. It’s also significant in boosting the immune system.
  3. Selenium – is used by the body to convert to the active form of thyroid hormone. Most people with Hashimoto’s are at risk for this deficiency, which can manifest as increased anxiety, fatigue, and depression.
  4. Zinc – is involved as a catalyst in many different pathways in the body. It’s also very important for gut health, immune function, tissue healing, the conversion of T4 to T3, and the production of TSH.
  5. Magnesium – is necessary for hundreds of biochemical reactions in the body: it supports the immune system, maintains normal nerve and muscle function, strengthens bones, and keeps blood glucose levels steady, to name a few.

Cleansing the Liver

As humans we are exposed to toxins and chemicals on a daily basis which directly inhibit and alter proper thyroid function. Their main mechanism of action alters liver function of an enzyme that metabolizes thyroid hormone, thus resulting in an unnatural up or down regulation of the hormone. The main chemicals affecting thyroid function are found below. Please note that it is not necessary to be in direct contact with these toxins, as most are present in our foods and the air we breathe. And some are unfortunate to be in jobs in which they are present around them daily such as dry cleaners, mechanics, construction workers, etc:

  • PCBs -fish from contaminated waters, farmed fish, dairy and meat products
  • Dioxins- a byproduct involving chlorine from waste incineration, pesticide and chemical formation, paper bleaching (also found in meat, dairy and fish)
  • Pesticides- in the air, food, water, and soil specifically maneb and macozeb which are sprayed on fruits
  • PCPs- wood preservative
  • BPA- found in the lining of metal food cans, dental sealants and plastic bottles
  • Heavy metals- cadmium (cigarettes), mercury (fish, dental fillings), lead
  • PFOA- stain and water resistant coating for carpet, furniture, fast-food containers, paints and foams

Healing Thyroid Disease Naturally

It is imperative to understand your symptoms as well as how your thyroid imbalances is negatively impacting your health, so that you can finally resolve the imbalances gently and naturally. As simple symptom such as fatigue could be your thyroid’s way of asking for help.  If your thyroid is out of balance, discovering the root cause and resolving the underlying symptoms is the first step. Dr. Nirvana uses botanical medicines and nutritional modification as well as using natural thyroid medication (when needed) to address thyroid imbalances in her patients. Often with Hashimoto’s disease, the focus is more on stabilizing the immune system (vs simply giving thyroid medicine). Whatever the cause may be, Naturopathic medicine has a number of Holistic solutions in healing the thyroid. If you are interested in healing your thyroid issues naturally, please contact the office for an appointment, to begin feeling your vibrant self again.
