MTHFR Defects and Estrogen Dominance

The Link Between Estrogen & MTHFR

MTHFR is an enzyme that adds a methyl group to folic acid to make it usable by the body. The MTHFR gene produces this MTHFR enzyme that’s also important for proper metabolism, muscle growth & glutathione production. If you have a mutation in MTHFR, you may have trouble effectively eliminating toxins from the body or balancing hormones.


How Does this Manifest in your Body?

  1. High cholesterol
  2. Difficulty getting pregnant/birth defects
  3. Estrogen dominance
  4. Low energy

But if you suffer from bloating, abnormal periods, acne, mood swings, fibroids, blood clots, endometriosis, PCOS or irritability, these symptoms are signs of Estrogen Dominance. And your body removes estrogen through the process of methylation. So if you have a defect in the MTHFR gene/enzyme, estrogen builds up making your symptoms worse.


What can You do to Help?

Though it isn’t possible to change a gene, there are things that can be done to minimize the potential for problems.

  1. Focus on gut health – It’s important to focus on gut health so that the body can absorb the nutrients from food as effectively as possible. This also helps avoid candida, which can make MTHFR related problems worse.

This is why I like to keep it as simple as possible when recommending supplements. A little can go a long way and using a few supplements at a time is better than a myriad that may be causing more health obstacles down the road.

I’d like to introduce you to one of my very most favorite supplements known as Hydrastis canadensis or better known as Berberine. This beautifully colored herb has long been used in traditional Chinese, Ayurvedic and Naturopathic protocols to help fight off bacteria, viruses and other harmful pathogens. In my Practice, I often use it to help balance blood sugar, eliminate Candida and up-regulate metabolism to assist with weight loss. 

One of the reasons berberine is so beneficial to the body is that it works with many different physiological pathways of the body that can activate adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK). This enzymes controls how energy is used in the body and how it’s used inside the cell. Think of it as a switch that turns things on and off. Berberine turns on AMPK to regulate the biological activities that normalize lipid, glucose and energy imbalances.Another interesting fact is that it can form structures with other compounds to increase it’s efficacy. I just love how the innate intelligence of the human body! 

Health Benefits of Berberine

Insulin Resistance and Diabetes – As mentioned previously, Berberine is incredibly helpful in balancing the blood sugar levels in the body and can help control diabetes. It does this by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing the production of glucose in the liver.

Weight Loss – studies show that Berberine may help reduce body weight by improving the function of fat-regulating hormones like insulin and leptin. It also helps inhibit the growth of fat cells and improve the activity of brown fat, which converts fats into energy. (Source).

Gut Health –  Berberine may help improve immune function by maintaining healthy gut flora, providing antioxidant properties and activating white blood cells, which are responsible for preventing infections. As well as killing various bacteria, viruses or fungi wreaking havoc in the gut. (Source).

The liver is the heaviest and the second largest organ in the human body. It is probably one of the most hardworking organs of the body and performs a number of functions. It is a key player in our body’s digestive system as whatever you eat or drink passes through it.

The most important function of the liver is cleaning the blood by getting rid of harmful chemicals present in the body. It also helps in the production of bile, which, in turn, helps in breaking down the fat in the body. It helps in the storing of sugar (glucose), which provides a quick energy boost whenever required by the body.

The liver flushes out harmful toxins and wastes from the body. Therefore, it is very important to take care of the liver and ensure that it is in good condition. If it’s not taken care of properly, the liver slows down, and toxins start accumulating in the body and tissues. Luckily, whenever there is something wrong with the liver, it displays certain symptoms or warning signs that indicate that it isn’t working properly.   • Avoid processed foods.
  • Try to eat more of organic foods that are low in sodium and other toxic substances.
  • Minimize refined food consumption.
  • Do not cook food in inflammatory vegetable oils such as sunflower oil, corn oil or safflower oil.
  • Reduce the consumption of fructose.
  • Spinach, cabbage, parsley, chicken, and eggs are rich in amino acids. Eat more of them.
  • You should also consume foods that are rich in sulfur, such as broccoli, eggs, sprouts, garlic, etc.
  • Reduce alcohol consumption.
  • Quit smoking.

Here’s a quick little detox drink to help you get started:

  • 4 medium carrots, scrubbed
  • 2 handfuls baby spinach
  • 1 medium red beet
  • 1 English cucumber
  • 1 green apple, cored
  • 1 lemon, rind removed
  • 1-inch piece ginger root, plus more to taste

Push the ingredients through your juicer, and consume whole or strain with a fine mesh sieve.
