The Difference Between Oral and IV Vitamins

How IV Therapy Benefits You More Thank Oral Supplementation

What if there was one thing in your body that had the power to control the way you look, feel and think? And what if supporting this one thing was the key to unlocking everlasting health? Sound too good to be true? I’m here to tell you that not only is this a fact, but it’s this vital organ in your body that serves as a common denominator for most of today’s health problems. I’m referring to your gut.

The current Merck Manual lists 14 main gastrointestinal disorders, with up to 14 subdivisions within each of the principle groupings (Beers, 2006). Add to this the finding that many other disease states affect the gastrointestinal tract significantly, and both give us a strong reminder that our gut has a major influence on our health. Intravenous (IV) therapy can be a useful adjunct to the oral treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.

This is because by the time symptoms of disease have made their appearance, it is sometimes too late for oral vitamins and minerals to make much difference. Nevertheless, these same vitamins and minerals, given intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously, can benefit many diseases. We know that the health of the GI tract affects the overall health of all body functions and the well-being of every individual. We approach the problem of disease as a problem of the cell. What the cell needs to be maximally healthy is always found in nature. However, to be effective, these nutrients must be admitted into the cell.

When given in high concentration, IV or IM nutrients enter the cell by sheer force of numbers. Administering nutrients in a concentration great enough to force those nutrients into the cell by means of a high-concentration gradient as well as the ability of the cell wall to absorb them, is highly beneficial. Highly concentrated on the outside, the cell membrane is semi-permeable meaning that it admits the nutrients into the cell due to the high-concentration gradient that was created.

The only way to obtain this high concentration is by IV or IM administration. With the GI cells, the IV route is especially useful for this purpose, because it’s immediately absorbed. When oral absorption is not effective, the parenteral route proves to be the most effective option.

So if you find yourself suffering from any GI issues (gas, bloating, acid-reflux), hormone imbalances, hypothyroidism, menopause, Hashimotos, or even trying to prevent the common cold; an IV would be the best option for you. And for every one of my patients, I custom-make each and every IV, so that you get exactly what you need. No cookie cutter recipes in my office!

What you Need to Know to Strengthen your Gut Health

What you Need to Know to Strengthen your Gut Health

Empower Yourself with Optimal Gut Support

Everyone’s microbiome configuration is original, similar to how we each have our own unique fingerprint. But there are certain elements that can cause trouble for most of us. For example, we all have some yeast in our microbiomes, including the notorious fungi known as Candida. Normally, this yeast exists in harmony with the other microbes, but when it is allowed to overgrow (usually due to a high sugar diet or lowered immune system), it can cause low-grade inflammation and stress on our health. The same goes for certain types of bacteria that can cause digestive distress as well as other health problems.

So how do you know if your gut microbiome is in a state of healthy balance, or if things are going awry in there? Your first clue is whether or not any of these common lifestyle or medical factors that lead to poor gut health apply to you:

  1. Chronic use of medications or antibiotics
  2. Stress
  3. A high fat/sugar/processed diet
  4. Autoimmunity
  5. Hormone imbalances

By the time someone has developed an imbalance of good and bad gut bacteria, their microbiome has become upset usually due to chronic damage from the above mentioned causes. In addition to bacterial or fungal imbalances that take place, the acid-base balance of the gut is usually:

  1. The cells that line the G.I. tract are highly inflamed.
  2. The protective layer of the intestines can be compromised.

When this happens, the gut barrier is damaged and allows intestinal permeability to occur (also known as Leaky Gut) therefore allowing the communication between the cells and the gut brain connection to become dysfunctional. This is when most people begin to complain of “brain fog”.

Addressing the Underlying Cause of GI Distress

Most people take probiotics to address intestinal problems. However, for probiotics to be effective those bacteria need access to high fiber foods in the gut. It’s at that point that the bacteria have to begin the process of breaking down the food so they can access the fibers and start the process of converting them into compounds created by probiotics to assist the body’s immunity. If a person takes probiotics and they already have an inflamed gut, most likely their overrun with bad bacteria.

Balancing the Gut Flora & Healing the Gut

The most critical factor in creating and maintaining healthy microbiome is a healthy plant-based, fiber rich diet. These dietary fibers are essentially the prebiotic foods that enable your good gut bacteria to grow and proliferate. Examples of prebiotics include:

  1. Barley
  2. Oat
  3. Apples
  4. Saurerkraut
  5. Leafy vegetables
  6. Dandelion
  7. Chicory
  8. Garlic
  9. Onions
  10. Sunchokes
  11. Unripened bananas
  12. Miso
  13. Short chain fatty acids
  14. Butyric acid

If you don’t feed your probiotic bacteria well enough, then they can’t thrive.

When people consume high sugar, high fat, processed foods, they promote the growth of pathological bacteria that can cause even further health problems.

Is your Gut to Blame for your Health Issues?

Is your Gut to Blame for your Health Issues?

Is your Gut to Blame for your Health Issues?

Your gut is the foundation of your entire health. Everything from the bacterial composition of your microbiome to the permeability of your gut lining can influence even seemingly unrelated aspects of your health such as weight gain, food intolerances, autoimmune conditions, hormone imbalances, and brain problems like anxiety and depression.

While there are many ways to look at gut dysfunction, I often run specific tests to determine someone’s gut health or gut dysfunction.

If the totality of microorganisms and their genetic material present in the gut is weakened, it can lead to increased inflammation and in turn, a cascade of other health problems – food intolerances and sensitivities included. For example, when your gut is compromised, like in leaky gut syndrome, foods end up passing through the gut lining into the bloodstream. This can put your immune system in overdrive and lead to increased inflammation throughout your body. With this hyper-reaction, your immune system ends up reacting to almost any food that passes through, including healthy foods like spinach.

Inflammation to Autoimmunity

Leaky gut syndrome and other conditions are really just the end scale of a chronic inflammation. Sadly, if left untreated, gut issues can lead to worsening disease states such as autoimmunity. For example, the autoimmune condition Celiac disease, is ultimately the end stage of gluten sensitivity. Some people with celiac disease have noticeable digestive symptoms but still deal with other symptoms like acne or other skin issues such as psoriasis or eczema.

Getting to the Root of the Cause

More than 70 percent of your immune system is located in your gut. It only makes sense then that healing your gut could bring relief to food sensitivities.

To begin the healing process, it’s important to find out what’s going on inside your body. If you think food sensitivities are a problem for you, labs will help determine both the cause and exact sensitivity. This will allow you to make sure you’re addressing everything necessary for healing. Here are the just a few of the labs that I run for patients from a Naturopathic perspective:

  • Leaky Gut Labs: These blood tests will measure antibody levels to show if there has been damage to the gut lining.
    • Zonulin and Occludin: These two proteins control gut permeability. Antibodies indicate damage to intestinal tight junctions.
    • Lipopolysaccharides are toxins that are excreted by your gut bacteria and can also indicate increased gut permeability.
  • Histamine Intolerance: During an allergic reaction your body releases chemicals known as histamines. This is a normal part of a healthy immune system. Certain foods naturally contain histamine or trigger the release of histamine. Some people though, can have an overload of histamine due to a deficiency or dysfunction of the enzymes that break down histamine. This is known as a histamine intolerance. It can create what is called a “pseudoallergy,” – an allergic reaction without an allergen.
  • Food Sensitivity Tests – Can be more difficult to pinpoint the exact reason behind sensitivities. For some people, eating small amounts of these foods don’t produce any symptoms. However, when symptoms do arise, they are less intense than allergies but can be just as debilitating. Symptoms can include brain fog, inflammation, migraines, bloating, and other digestive problems. However, a simple at home test I offer my patients can help to determine the exact foods that are the root cause of their symptoms.

Ramp Up Your Gut Healing

If you don’t work on healing your gut, it doesn’t matter how many foods you eliminate or tests you do. Ultimately you’ll be left fighting the same symptoms over and over. Once you have discovered the reason for your GI symptoms, you can begin to enhance the healing process with Gut Be Calm™.

In my Naturopathic Medical Practice, underlying GI issues are one of the most common contributors I see to people’s health problems. But since gut symptoms don’t always accompany gut problems, many people go years without understanding the true cause of their symptoms. If you’re interested addressing the originating cause to your symptoms, please contact the office to begin…you’re just an email away to feeling your best again!
